#30 EX2 GROUP PRESENTATIONS - COMMENTS

EXERCISE 2 - GROUP PRESENTATIONS
1. Presentation A - Case Study - Trailer of one blockbuster movie
2. Presentation B - Scripting & Script Read, one Story from Ex1

DM2C

1. Zul, Barnabas, Khai, Martin
A - Hunger Games (bb - late)
B - Martin's Ex1 Story
- Myanmar boy forced to be a war soldier

A - need to simplify log line, to use turning points & 3Act correctly, climax is missing. PLEASE BACK UP YOUR WORK and submit on time. late submissions are late regardless of the reason. (the school only accepts reasons highlighted in student handbook)
B - motive needs to be clearer and more specific. write "thoughts" into the script, using audio/visual

2. Alvin, Tio, Yoshua, Nikita
A - Back to the Future
B - Alvin's Ex1 Story
- Dead boys stop mom from hurting the lorry driver that killed them when they crossed the road

A - Great logline, act2 should be act1, we learnt that there are 2 motives that conflict each other (one main plot and one subplot)
B - need to focus on key characters as it is their story, story to be told from key character's point of view (boys)

3. Hasanah, Soeun, Danielle, Wenting
A - Pirates of the Carribean 3 (At World's End)
B - Hasanah's Ex1 Story
- Story of successful children's storybook author, Lily Zhong

A - jack sparrow looks like the key character but is the supporting role here (supporting because his wishy washy motives do not change the story)
B - screenplay needs more "action" so it can be more exciting and dramatized. interview is used as screenplay treatment/style, talk & info from interview need to be short & sweet.

4. Laura, Quinn, Vania, Karrina
A - Hellboy 2
B - Laura's Ex1 Story
- a very determined couple struggles to get married on the day chosen by a fortune teller

A - key characters' motive in logline to be clearer to focus on what the story is about. storyboard needs focus as well - focus on key char + motive...
B - script can be edited & improved with planting of important info at strategic parts of the story. script has dialogue that can be removed as they do not contain info helpful for the story

5. Jason, Samuel, Kelvin, Cynthia, Pingting
A - The Avengers (bb - late)
B - Pingting's Ex1 Story
- a boy struggles to prevent his teacher from informing his parents about his school exam results

A - Target audience - ?? this movie doesn't have a specific TA as any and all age groups can enjoy the story/show. PLEASE BACK UP YOUR WORK and submit on time. late submissions are late regardless of the reason. (the school only accepts reasons highlighted in student handbook)
B - story sounds fun! boy's character needs to be developed more so that we will just be more "attached" to the character at the end of the story

DM2D

1. Beatrice, Blanche, Kelly, Pro, Eldon
A - Narnia (1) - the lion, the witch & the wardrobe
B - Beatrice's Ex1 Story
- A python struggles to return home to her babies after being swept away by a flood

A - Well done! note: the movie logline can be communicated in a 1min trailer or 9hr trilogy
B - act2 needs more development - python struggles to return home... the journey seems missing in story. also needs more action added into the story, e.g. scene of snake being swept away. suggestion: maybe python should save the dog who returns the favor later when python is caught by dog's human owner.

2. Rizky, Azim, Weng, Nell, Raymond, Nithin
A - The Hobbit
B - Nadia's Ex1 Story
- A Schizo, Phoenix, thinks he has saved a family from a fire but had skinned them instead

A - key character IS the hobbit and no one else...
B - some loopholes in the story - may need to explain schizophrenia and how it makes key character behave the way he does. climax needs more action - suggestion: climax to add a huge fight/struggle with father ("villain"). overall screenplay is ok, will be improved with story & script development

3. Yosua, Ronnie, Jia Ling, Nadia, Yiyu
A - Hotel Transylvania
B - Hui Cheng's Ex1 Story
- Taiwanese celebrity struggles & fails to get her daughter back from kidnappers

A - logline & 3act (submitted to bb) has improved & corrected after comments from class presentation, thanks! submitted work much better - except storyboard is still over 6-8 key frames! anyways, well done :)
B - act2 needs development - how must she struggle with getting her daughter back? script needs editing to add important info & tighten story

4. Kris, Chia Bi, Hui Cheng, Lay Zin
A - 2012
B - Rizky's Ex1 Story
- girl struggles to stay alive when a brutal murderer targets her in her own home

A - logline not clear enough, motive needs to be more specific. Act 2 is about how key character struggles with motive - need to focus on that
B - too many loopholes & missing important info in the story/ screenplay/ script. need to focus on story & work on story development - get the story correct before writing the script. i see group effort but you have to know & use the 3Act effectively to make this screenplay work.

5. Nithin
Presentation A - Rise of the Guardians
Presentation B - did not participate in group work

A - key character not correct... whose story is it? 3Act needs a bit more work and understanding of the terms like "turning point", "up the stakes", confrontation, etc. in general ok, but story focus needs to be corrected
